Mumble is another server we host that allows players to verbally communicate with each other in real time. It runs at the same time as the Minecraft client, in the background.  Mumble is similar to [https://discord.com Discord], a very popular voice service for gaming, but we have complete control over it so we can ensure that Scoutcraft players are safe and can't access unwanted content.  Discord, on the other hand, allows users to join any group, even groups that are not age appropriate.  The Mumble client is free to download.  For instructions on how to do so and how to configure the client for Scoutcraft, see [[Configuring the Mumble Client]].

The final piece to the Scoutcraft setup is the Scoutcraft Discord Server.  Scoutcraft allows all of online players to interact by voice and chat, as well as deliver server information in real-time.  To set up Scoutcraft's Discord server, see [[Configuring the Discord Server]].

Installing Minecraft[edit | edit source]

To install Minecraft, you'll need two things:

  1. An Xbox gamertag
  2. Minecraft client software

Xbox Gamertag[edit | edit source]

You'll need a Microsoft Live Xbox account to play Minecraft. Registering for a Live account is free. To register and choose your Minecraft gamertag, visit:

https://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/minecraft/sign-up

We suggest creating an account especially for your child, rather than them use yours.

Once you have registered with Microsoft and have an Xbox gamertag, email that gamertag to cubmaster@homewoodscouting.org so that we can add it to the approved list.

Minecraft Software[edit | edit source]

Downloading the Client[edit | edit source]

There is a one-time cost to purchase the Minecraft client. There are two types for desktops - Bedrock edition (for Windows, Android and consoles) and Java edition, which works across all platforms including MacOS. We strongly recommend the Java version because it is more compatible with Scoutcraft and with Minecraft in general, but you can use either with Scoutcraft. The configuration instructions below are for Java, but Bedrock is fairly similar.

To purchase and download the Java client, visit:

https://minecraft.net/en-us/store/minecraft-java-edition

Once you have downloaded the Java client and open it for the first time, you will log in using the Live account you've created.

Configuring the Client[edit | edit source]

Once you have the client installed and you are logged in with your Live account, you will need to configure the client to connect to the Scoutcraft Server. For instructions on how to do so, see Configuring the Client Software.

Configuring Discord (for voice interaction)[edit | edit source]

The final piece to the Scoutcraft setup is the Scoutcraft Discord Server. Scoutcraft allows all of online players to interact by voice and chat, as well as deliver server information in real-time.  To set up Scoutcraft's Discord server, see Configuring the Discord Server.
